Innovative High School Duo Launches Nonprofit to Aid Seniors with Tech Skills

In our rapidly advancing digital age, keeping pace with technological changes can be a challenge for many. Recognizing this, two forward-thinking seniors from Jesuit High School have taken a remarkable step. They established a nonprofit, YourTechQ, dedicated to conducting technology workshops for the senior community.

Anisha Dasgupta and Shomik Sen, friends since childhood, shared a common interest in STEM and technology. Their drive to contribute positively to society led them to observe a significant need during the pandemic. They noticed their music teachers, both older adults, grappling with the shift from traditional in-person lessons to online formats. This observation sparked their initiative.

Launching YourTechQ in March 2022, the duo began by offering essential tech guidance. Their initial workshops at retirement communities cover fundamental aspects of smartphone usage, covering both iPhone and Android devices. As co-founder Anisha Dasgupta explains, these sessions are just the starting point. The team customizes subsequent workshops based on specific needs and interests, often introducing residents to new, useful applications.

A notable success was their introduction of WhatsApp to residents, enlightening them about the app's capability for free international calls, which was met with astonishment and appreciation. The impact of their workshops has been significant across the dozen-plus Portland metro area communities they partner with. Linda Pineo, a workshop coordinator at Summerplace, emphasized the immense value of these sessions, especially for residents in their 70s and 80s, who now find it essential to use digital tools for everyday tasks like healthcare management.

With aspirations for careers in engineering and data science, both Dasgupta and Sen are committed to continuing their community service beyond their high school years.
